The Net’s impact on Society
On the Net today there is a vast amount of information available for almost anyone to access. The internet has made it possible for more people to see more material and material they may not have otherwise been exposed to without the aid of the Net. With all this information and materials that people can reach on the internet it seems possible that the use of the internet may be changing the behaviors of the generation which has grown up with it. Due to advancements that the Net provides and the different form of entertainment and information that it possesses, it seems logical that the generation which grows up using it would act and behave differently than the ones before which have not. However, with both the good and bad cites the influence that the Net may have could be positive or negative. Present on the Net are cite where people can watch pornography, download music, television shows or movies illegally, and buy essays or homework assignments. On the other hand, there are also pages which hold research, information on school subject, news articles that tell current event around the world. The use of the Net and the materials on it has affected the behaviors and morals of society’s youth. Although the internet possesses good and bad materials and information, the widespread participation on the inappropriate websites has damaged the morals of the generation which grew up using the Net.
With the education information on the Net there is the potential that this new access to the vast amount of material on the internet has positively influenced the youth due to the ability to view intellect improving information created by the internet. Since people can now learn more information faster on the internet than they could before when merely using books, one could infer that this access to data the generation that grew up with the Net may be smarter. In addition due to the connection that the internet allows between countries all over the world, children that use the internet have the potential to be more informed about the world and global events which occur. Unlike past generations the world is more connected through the Net, thus it is possible for people to be more informed about current event around the world. The New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC all provide articles and news stories online which offers people with access to knowledge that provides them with global awareness and perspective. Expanding awareness of world events helps eliminate ignorance and creates a smarter population. Furthermore, with information databases like the online version of The Encyclopedia Britannica, the Oxford English Dictionary it is possible for people to gather facts and information on the Net quickly. Especially with the aid of websites like Google and Yahoo, that can direct web surfers to sites, people have been able to research with ease. The vast amount of information available on the internet can help people augment their intelligence outside of structured education environments, as well as help grasp a deeper understanding of materials taught in those settings. In addition through the use of online study websites like www.quizlet.com, allow users to create online flash. On Quizlet users can practice and take tests with the materials that they put on the note cards that they make. Also to help with time management online programs like Vitamin R, allow people to set time goal and allot themselves time to complete different activities and assignments. With these different sites on the Net which provide people with the means to better their education and increase their intelligence it would seem as though the generation that grew up the innovations of the internet would be less ignorant and more informed.
Although it may seem as though the Net enables users to increase their intelligence and better themselves many use the internet to practice morally degrading activities. While the internet does hold vast amounts of information and intellect building knowledge, it also contains pages which permit minors to participate in illegal activity. With pornography, music downloading sites and homework that can be bought online, the Net provides access to a various activities that would not have been as easily accessible without the internet. People, specifically teenagers, can go online to websites like Chat Roulete where users are connected to strangers and flash their webcams. Behavior such as this would be almost impossible without the Net and sites like this which appear on. Thus, one can imply that the Net has provided people with the means to act inappropriately and sparked provocative actions that would not have been possible and most likely did not occur before the Net. Large amounts of pornography are also available on the Net which has made it more reachable for people and made the means of viewing such material easier. Since porn is on the internet it has also broken the age barrier of who can view the adult material, because of this young people can participate in activities once considered unsuitable for their ages through the use of the Net. Viewing pornography is merely one of the immoral activities that the generation which has grown up with the internet can do, buying essays or other homework assignment or simply plagiarizing. Due to all the research and information on the Net it has made plagiarizing a common occurrence since the assignment one may crave are merely a few clicks away. Another popular form of stealing present on the internet is illegally downloading music, television shows, or movies. Before the Net stealing music, television shows, or movies would have been difficult and require a person to physically take the item out of a store. Yet with the aid of the Net people are able to do this, like watch porn, from the comfort of their own homes on their computers. Furthermore, with the widespread practice of these activities it has become more common and almost acceptable from society to download and steal materials online. These actions have become more common and the corruption of youth behaviors and morals seems to stem from the inappropriate activities that they engage in on the internet.
The Net has provided society with the means to either improve their intelligence and to degrade or ignore their morals. Despite the fact that people can use the resources on the internet to watch the news or read articles regarding current world events, more often than not people are watching pornography or illegally downloading entertainment material. The inappropriate materials on the Net which were once restricted to only adults are now accessible to younger people and children, allowing them to mature faster and corroding their morals regarding such behavior. While the internet does benefit society and could help increase intelligence its impact on the morals and behavior of the youth that has grown up with it illustrates that it can do more bad then good regarding the behavioral choices of the users.

ReplyDeleteYes, it does look like you need to expand your research. You are making claims that need to be grounded in evidence. Further, you could think about whether these actions [downloading music illegally, watching porn, plagiarizing] are all equally problematic. Most importantly, you would need to clarify to which morals you are referring. Consider counterarguments and contrary evidence that you could discuss and refute. Please note several comments about comma usage. My comments below are in brackets.
First paragraph:
With all this information and materials that people can reach on the internet[,] [need a comma here for introductory phrase] it seems possible that the use of the internet may be changing the behaviors of the generation which has grown up with it.
Due to advancements that the Net provides and the different form of entertainment and information that it possesses, it seems logical that the generation which grows up using it would act and behave differently than [from, not than]
However [why? it’s not clear how this statement is contrary to the prior one, what “however” suggests], with both the good and bad cites [sites] [such as? What do you mean? Good and bad sites?]
Present on the Net are cite where…[need to proofread] [also, it would be better to combine these sentences so that the good and bad is clear]
The use of the Net and the materials on it has affected the behaviors and morals of society’s youth. [How does this statement relate to prior sentence? The order of ideas is confusing because you were just referring to positive elements.]
Although the internet possesses good and bad materials and information, [just recognize that this is common knowledge]
…the widespread participation on the inappropriate websites has damaged the morals of the generation which grew up using the Net. [Make sure that you sufficiently develop this point that seems to be a thesis. Do you have sufficient evidence? What morals?]
Second paragraph:
With the education information on the Net there is the potential that this new access to the vast amount of material on the internet has positively influenced the youth due to the ability to view intellect improving information created by the internet. [very wordy] Are you using intellect improving as an adjective? If so, would need hyphen: intellect-improving]
Since people can now learn more information faster on the internet than they could before when merely using books, one could infer that this access to data the generation that grew up with the Net may be smarter. [Interesting inference to make, but it is too hasty. Develop this logic and supply supportive evidence. Or, show why it isn’t true, which seems to be where you are heading.]
In addition due to the connection that the internet allows between countries all over the world, children that use the internet have the potential to be more informed about the world and global events which occur. [Ok, it has the potential. But are they more informed? How do you know this? What could support it?]
Unlike past generations[,] the world [you tend to miss comma after introductory phrase]
Third paragraph:
ReplyDeleteAlthough it may seem as though the Net enables users to increase their intelligence and better themselves[, need this comma] many use the internet to practice morally degrading activities.
Since porn is on the internet[,] it has also broken the age barrier of who can view the adult material, [and] because of this young people can participate in activities once considered unsuitable for their ages through the use of the Net.
Viewing pornography is merely one of the immoral activities [Why immoral? By whose standards? Do you want to discuss more about the age limits?]
Yet with the aid of the Net people are able to do this, like watch porn, from the comfort of their own homes on their computers. [You may want to separate some of these ideas into a new paragraph: ideas about privacy and anonymity]
The paragraph tends to repeat the same few examples.
Last paragraph;
The Net has provided society with the means to either improve their intelligence and to degrade or ignore their morals. [Society? Too broad. Who? Your examples relate a lot of teenagers. Is this the group you are discussing?]
more often than not people are watching pornography or illegally downloading entertainment material. [What is your evidence for this? What did you research?]
While the internet does benefit society and could help increase intelligence[,] its impact on the morals and behavior of the youth that has grown up with it illustrates that it can do more bad then [than] good regarding the behavioral choices of the users.
